Maestro: Oscar Bait or Masterpiece?
There are many aesthetic symbols of Oscar success: Black and white; Period setting; Biographical subjects; Classical music; Queer subject matter. Bradley Cooper’s newest film Maestro has all of these: It’s a partly black and white, period piece, biographical romance about Leonard Bernstein, perhaps the most famous American conductor and composer, exploring his relationship with his wife and identity as a queer man.
Today, by analysing the film through two of these aesthetic markers, its treatment of queer subtext and classical music, we’re going to tease out exactly what makes something Oscar Bait at its core, beyond just the black and white.

The Lord of the Rings’ Greatest Scene
Просмотров 22 тыс.2 года назад
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy - The Return of the King in particular - is famous in the fantasy film genre for its epic battle scenes. However, the film succeeds not because of its grandeur - but because of its humanity. In this video essay / review / reaction, I break down how the film's editor and trilogy's producer Jamie Selkirk edits for emotion in a way that deservedly won him the Academy ...
Life is Beautiful: Finding Beauty in the Holocaust
Просмотров 80 тыс.2 года назад
In Life is Beautiful, Roberto Benigni found love, comedy and beauty in the tragedy of the Holocaust. The Oscar-winning classic is a masterpiece in screenwriting, acting, direction and cinematography/photography. In this review/video essay I break down how Benigni shows us that the most beautiful thing about life is you. So stay true to yourself. Because if you can learn to love others with the ...
Marriage Story: The Most Painful Scene
Просмотров 2,2 млн2 года назад
Marriage Story (Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver) is a 2019 Netflix love story told through a divorce. Today, I'm breaking down the scene where lawyer Nora (Laura Dern) tries to convince Nicole (Johansson) to hire her in her separation from Charlie in an analytical, review style. Laura Dern won an oscar for her portrayal of Nora in this film, and I think the success of her character can be equal...
Revisiting Call Me By Your Name.
Просмотров 1,6 млн2 года назад
Call Me By Your Name (Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer) has received backlash for portraying a 'borderline pedophilic' and potentially abusive relationship in a positive manner. Personally I think these gray elements of the film only add to the enticingly 'taboo' nature of the relationship initially set up by its homosexuality; but I know there are many who disagree. And yes, Oliver does know he...
How Young Royals Re-Defines Teen Drama
Просмотров 209 тыс.2 года назад
In Young Royals, Edvin Ryding and Omar Rudberg play Wilhelm and Simon, two outsiders falling for each other in a crazy world of royalty and social pressure. This is an analysis video essay / video review on the show. When reading a lot of the reviews for Young Royals, a common theme is that people were surprised that a show about a royal prince in an elite boarding school could be so relatable....
this was beautiful, made me cry in about ten seconds
The problem I have with this film is that it's not long enough! haha Love everything about this movie. Makes me wanna actually be in that place. It's so beautiful.
This movie was pedobait
I have to say that I enjoyed your revisit VERY much! From the very beginning I thought Elio's question of Does Mom Know meant about his Dad NOT about Eliio himself. And that is reverberated when Oliver calls and Elio tells him THEY know about them. Anyway, THANK YOU for this so much! And I doubt anyone will actually read this but, if they do and if they know there is a scene that just keeps nagging at me....When Oliver is up and is watching Elio sleep after their drunken night, what is with the flashback scenes in red back at the monument? The scene is giving the impression that they were climbing it and kissing there? Then it goes back to Oliver who has this expression on his face as if he has come to some determination it is best for him to go back home. I'm just so confused about it.
I have yet to watch this movie, but simply looking at the scenes of Maestro on this video, the performance felt off and soulless, like he was not trying to understand Bernstein, it felt just like impersonation.
why do people think elio's dad is gay? his dad is talking about deep and passionate love. in the sequel he has an affair with a female professor. alot of things can get in the way besides being gay
His dad is bisexual. Hope that helps
Nice vid bro!
Enjoyed learning this movie exists, thank you and enjoyed the insights.
Holocaust did happen. Hilter was a fucking tweaking on meth insane evil. The Soviet Union lost around 27 million people during the war China suffered 14 million casualties during World War II, a number included in the approximately 35 million Chinese people who were killed or wounded during over a decade of Japanese occupation.
this review is amazing, especially considering it's your first video on the channel. Loved your video about call me by your name, too. Keep it up!
I have really enjoyed this but want to share a thought... "Mr Pearlman has the perfect life... his supposedly utopian marriage is in fact built upon a lie" I don't love "lie" here. Note that the subject of their conversation is never explicitly a man or woman. Personally speaking, sexuality as I get older has become less rigid, less defined by gender, more about connection via our ways of interacting with the world and the people in it. In many accounts of yesteryear's homosexual connections (I think specifically of James Baldwin's writing), the rigid concept of gayness does not exist. Homosexual relationship can be soemthing that is moved into and out of. Although this may be because of cultural pressure toward marriage, which I feel Oliver falls prey to, it also engenders a degree of freedom. I think the word "lie" here does a disservice to the ways life circumstances change, up to and including our romantic relationships. Remembering that the author and actors are all straight, and wondering how they could have written and portrayed such a tender story, I conclude that the subversive, central concept explored in Call Me By Your Name is not so much sexuality as connection.
I'm crying over this wonderful review! It's amazing and painfull at the same time. Thank you! ❤
this essay is infact a masterpiece of its own congrats , you are a natural talent !!
I really looked forward to this. I was deeply influenced by Bernstein and his music as a young aspiring classical musician. Actually watching Bernstein conduct the last movement of the second symphony brings tears in my eyes. I never shed a tear throughout the whole movie. There was no soul. I wanted to stop watching it, but I kept watching to judge it properly. Clearly a wrong choice. This was a very forgetful film. Now I’m angry that since this was made, a proper film about Bernstein will not be made in the near future.
Ravel used, instant like
Interesting when Elio says “does mom know?” When he’s talking to his dad I always thought it was referring to his relationship with Oliver not the dad with someone else so interesting
the silence of this movie was what really signified the meaning to me. idk something about it made it so much more beautiful
Not just this scene, your analysis gets me tears. Nothing more overwhelming than revealing the greatness of something. This scene and also the blackgate one in ROTK always give me goosebumps, the catharsis as you put it.
This is interesting so i watched this movie when it came out and i absolutely loved it but i never read people's comments about it and now that i have read them here and under other videos i feel like i watched a completely different movie! I love this movie because of Ellio's character and his family i never thought of the story as a beautiful love story! I never liked Oliver's character at all to me he is the abuser older guy who get involved with an underage teenager and he doesn't seem like to be in love with him at all it feels like all of it is just a summer thing for him and the movie literally shows us he is so moved on from everything with that phone call at the end he just has a controll on Ellio's mind because of the age difference That was my take away i loved the story because i thought it was about Ellio and in his age it was very common to be with the wrong person and it was still beautiful how he had all those pure feelings
First love-it might blossom or it might wither.
fantastic!! ty marcus
Wow you truly truly truly got it! This was so beautiful and moving. Liked and Subscribed
incredible video
When the kid comes off the tank and you hear the adult voice saying so that was my story my father gaved his life to protect mine.I burst into tears everytime
Oh my god. This film has a special place in my heart due to relating to it a little too much, the ending especially. I seriously cried while watching this video LOL.
11:55 - I don't think it's a lie. It was a decision made.
Oh my god , you should watch the next two seasons and make an analysis!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in love with this show. It's the greatest thing ever .
Ravel and Debussy are so fashionable right now. I can’t watch a video essay on introspection or sensuality without hearing it in the background.
Its not a choice he made. Ravel is used in the movie
You are very observant with this. Spot on!
This gives the name "Twinkathee Chalamet" a whole new meaning.
Wow, I’m speechless I’ve never been interested in this story in any form of media before. Now I want to read and watch the story. Wow.
What the f*ck! This is such an incredible video!!! One of the best videos essays I’ve seen!!! Now I’m just finding out this is your second video 😱😱😱
in what world this dude is 24 years old LOL
I haven't seen it bc nothing about watching a marriage crumble interests me
17 year boy remember that with like 30 year old
the sound in this film completely freezes me up, it is exactly the feeling of summer, just hot enough to make every passing moment tangible and present and everyone sound; ticking clocks, bugs, lawnmowers, pages turning, foot steps, someone cooking in the kitchen slowly raising the temperature of the already humid and warm living room. this movie FEELS like being 12 living in florida finally hitting puberty and being faced with very serious concepts and talks from my parents and siblings that i for once finally really understand and take seriously
To feel how to be inlove.. and feel the sheer pain of heartbreak and letting go..
Unfortunately, both of the leading actors did not come across as gay or in love.. I did not believe them at all. If the chemistry doesn't work, nothing works. Both actors have lovely classical faces, but it's not enough. Loved the Merchant Ivory aspect (visual) of the film, but it was empty... and the father's monologue @ the end was so pretentious and it made my skin crawl. This film is all cherry, no sundae.
I couldn’t finish this movie. The grooming was too hard to get through.
i was eating something and got instanlty uncomfy when the p e ac h s c e n e came up
It's not really "finding beauty in the Holocaust", it's finding beauty in life. Roberto Benigni himself said that this movie isn't a comedy about the Holocaust, but a movie about a comedian facing an extreme situation.
I am doom to watch all new analysis of this movie. Haha I was obsessed with this film before it came out.
I am going to cry
The movie that I first discover Timothée Chalamet.
This is a wonderful analysis of the work, thank you for sharing your thoughts!
what a beautiful perception of the film, i felt the scenes again! thank you
This was amasing, i m speachless❤
Very insightful, Marcus, thanks - you made my appreciation for the filmmaking more pointed. This film taps into all the roundabouts of marriage and pain ( overt and private) . I lived in LA and recall the performance quality of creative talent and manipulation with legal or casting that dials up the jeopardy of good and bad choices. Your characterisation of the pain exchange is rich and keenly observed. Everyone ( lawyers included) are acting their parts for confrontation. It's a form of laddering up. One of my favourite lines is when Charlie asks his first attorney " I'm I being billed for your joke-telling ?". He knows EVERYTHING is on the clock and that means fees as well as getting to the heart of destination resolution for their eventual separation. The judge sees through this in court and separates clients with means, from those who are next in line for a custody hearing. Your portrait of Scarlett is stunning. Bravo Marcus. Keep sharing . Forgot to add - Laura Dern's character removes the power red pumps and jacket to mirror a more "casual" friend-like feet curled up girlfriend attentive , empathetic seated position ! It's great scene to analyse.
I would love if you did a video on Luca Guadagnino new movie Challengers! I want to hear your thoughts
